The game of video poker is played on a computerized slot machine. The computer screen serves as the slot machine and hence the term video poker. Because the slot machine is computerized, it is devoid of any lever.
The video poker is played with a five card hand that is drawn from a deck of 52 cards. A traditional slot machine requires a player to insert the coins and pull the lever hoping that he or she might just be lucky enough to win the jackpot. But if you want to play video poker, then you have to insert a ticket that has barcodes printed on it.
In the game of video poker the player does not play against any other players. After inserting the ticket and placing the bet, the player has to click on the “deal” button. The machine will deal a set of five cards. The cards are dealt randomly by a random card generator. After the five cards are dealt, you can check your hand. If you want to discard a certain card, you can do so and get a new card from the virtual deck. If you want to keep a card, you can do so by clicking the “hold” button. After deciding on which card you want to discard, you have to click the “deal” button. The discarded card or cards will be replaced by new cards that will be drawn from the same virtual deck.
You can discard the cards in hand and get new ones for a maximum of five times. After you are satisfied with the cards in your hand, you have to click the “draw” button. There is a pay table located in the screen itself that contains information about all the winning combinations and the money to be paid for the winning combinations. The computer compares the cards of your hand that you have played with the winning combinations of the pay table.
If you have any of the winning combinations, you will win accordingly. The best winning combinations in a video poker game are the royal flush (hand containing ace-King-Queen-Jack-10 belonging to the same suit), the straight flush (all the five cards are in sequence and belonging to the same suit) and four of a kind (the hand will contain four cards of equal rank). Once you get to know the basics of video poker, it becomes both interesting as well as an enjoyable experience.
